How much would you say you would have to pay for an Eschezeaux Grand Cru 2006? Or a decent 2008 Chassagne Montrachet?
The answer may be less than you think. Twice a year, Antonin Rodet, one of the most prolific Burgundians whose own domain is in Mercurey on the Chalon part of the wine producing area, organises what he rather snobbily calls a Private Sale, but which is in fact a quite a large public sale of a wide range of wines.
Today is the Spring sale: 7 April, though you can order by 10 April to take advantage of their good prices, and jolly decent wines.
A quick feel of the range:
WHITES: Pay d'oc chardonnay 2010 for 3 euros, Macon Villages for 5 euros, Rully 1er cru white, 8.50 euros, Meursault 2008 16.50 euros, Chassagne Montrachet 1er cru 2008 "les Macherelles" 28 euros, Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru Cave privée 49.90 euros. And many more right across the price range. One I got there before was a Macon Viré-Clessé, mineral with bite; worth enquiring.
RED: Syrah Pays d'Oc 3 euros, Givry 2008 Rodet 7.30, great price; Mercurey 1er cru Chateau de Mercey 11 euros; Volnay 2007 16 euros; Vosne-Romanée 2006 24 euros; Echezeaux 2006 Grand Cru 50 euros. And more!
How good are they? Well, Rodet does so many it is hard to be sure that all are great, but in the range up to 20 euros you are getting good deals. For the big wines, his Chassagne-Montrachet red came across as a bit thin last time, and it made me wary of landing out 50 euros for a grand cru.
However, Antonin Rodet does bring top wines to wide publics at reasonable prices for that wine, and for that, as the French would say: "chapeau" (Hat's off).

Hurry if you are in the US, the sale is today. Or rendezvous again in December for the winter sale.
